Daily Science!

So I have decided to do a daily science post. Let's see how long I can keep it up.

Today's science: Measure your weight more scientifically.

Okay, so mostly when giving our weight, we say "Oh, I'm 165lbs," or "I'm 75 kilos," or something like that. Well, actually, pounds are a poor measure, and kilograms are in fact a measure of your mass not your weight. A kilo is a kilo, on Earth, or the Moon, or the solid diamond surface of a white dwarf star.

What your weight is, is your mass (in kilos) multiplied by the acceleration of gravity, which is, of course, different in different places. It's even different in different places on Earth! But only by tiny amounts; here on Earth, the acceleration of gravity is 9.80m/s². Take that number down, you're going to use it to find how much you actually weigh.

To find how much you weigh, take your mass in kilograms (if you only know it in pounds, the conversion is simple - 2.2lbs to the kilo - so just take that hypothetical 165lbs up there, and divide by 2.2, and as you might guess, it comes out as 75kg), and multiply it by the acceleration of gravity.

In this case, 75.0*9.80=735. But... 735 what it the question. The measure of weight, in kilograms per metre per second is the Newton, named, as you might guess, after Sir Isaac himself. We usually abbreviate it as N. So if your mass is 75.0kg, then your weight is 735N!

And now you know how to find out how much you actually weigh.

It's a lovely day here in Hilo, HI, with the sun shining, birds singing, the bay discoloured, and downtown a little flooded.

The good news is, that seems to be the worst of it here.

The bad news is, things continue to be Very Bad in Japan. I'd like to repeat my request that anyone over there please reply to this post, and let me know you're okay.

I'll try to keep things updated re: the seismic situation here in Hawaii.

So, like. I am wanting to go to Australia to visit my tyger for spring break. Perfectly reasonable, yeah? Only, like. I can't find a SINGLE ROUNDTRIP FLIGHT for the week I need to go for less than $2000USD.

Let me repeat that.

$2000.

To get to Australia from Los Angeles - several thousand miles FURTHER AWAY from the destination, mind you - is $898. To go from Hawaii to London - you know, on the other side of the PLANET FROM ME? - is less than $1100.

WHY THE FUCK IS IT MORE THAN TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS TO GO TO AUSTRALIA. WHY. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS.

Lucius Malfoy in the Mall With a Nanotech Beetle

OR: I Have Been Reading Way Too Much Harry Potter.

So, last night I dreamed that I had a dinner date with Lucius Malfoy and Voldemort.

Also, I was giving Draco Malfoy driving lessons (for the record, though I could manage an automatic in an emergency, I am NOT liscenced to drive). Unfortunately, he couldn't keep the gas and break straight, and we managed to crash into a mall entrance. Which then exploded into nanotech beetles - imagine a cross between the man-eating scarabs in The Mummy and the Replicators from SG-1, and that's pretty much what you get.

Then Lucius was there (I assume he Apparated), and very displeased - I was supposed to be getting ready for the Big Dinner, what was I doing bringing his son to this Muggle institution? And why did the Muggles have magic beetles?

I spent some time in the dream trying to explain nanotech to Malfoy Sr., and ended up going with 'kind of like really really really tiny clockwork,' as I levitated one and telekinetically disassembled it - the rest were kind of frozen in place by some effect - and didn't even go into the electron bond disruption that was necessary.

Then we were at a hairdresser, getting my hair done for the Big Dinner, only I ended up teleporting the hairdresser to the Mt. Everest base camp because he wasn't doing what I wanted.

...IDEK man. IDEK.

Tomorrow is the BIG DAY! Am leaving the continent, and heading for HAWAIILAND. Nooooo idea when I'll be getting back online - hopefully not in too long, I mean. At school, at least, yanno?

But for the next few days, possibly the next week, my connectivity will be spotty when I get moved, settled, de-jet-lagged, and so forth. You know. All that good stuff.

I dun wanna skool today. But I'm already here, and I've already missed one session of this class, and. Argh. >_< Baaaah. It's another gorgeous day out, and I'm stuck working on stupid pointless crap. More 'career assessment' (wtf does that have to do with scholarships?! I know what I like! I know what I'm good at! I HAVE A PLAN!) crap that doesn't even have anything at all relevant to me at ALL. >_<

It rated me high for POLITICAL SCIENTIST of all things. Oy vey. Anyone who knows me more than super-casually knows I think politics is dreadfully boring. I mean. I realise that it's important, but so's sewer maintenance. Doesn't mean I want anything to do with that, either. Why do none of these things ever do more than briefly flirt with the hard sciences?

OH RIGHT. Because it's a 'career' assessment. And when you think of serious sciences, it's really less of a 'career' and more of a 'calling.' Would you say that Stephen Hawking has a 'career' in theoretical physics? Does Neil deGrasse Tyson have a 'career' in astronomy? Carl Sagan? Marie Curie?

A career is something you do.

A scientist is something you are.

It's not even one yet as I type this, but I already feel like I've been up a million years. Augh. Why am I so bloody tired? >_<

Going to glass-class early today, in the hopes that I can get a bit more done - also to compensate for the fact that my joints are fucking KILLING me today. I got my finaid through, finally, which is good; hopefully I have everything covered this term. I have to remember to check with registration, and get my disbursement today, too.

In other news, X-Japan still rocks my world; why did I stop listening to them again? That's a rhetorical question.
